• What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy, is a state of deep relaxation and focused concentration. It’s a type of complementary therapy. An intense level of concentration and focus can help you make healthy changes to your habits or behaviors.

  • Is everything discussed in therapy confidential?

Everything that you discuss within therapy is absolutely confidential from your first contact.

I abide by the ethical framework of the Professional Hypnotherapy Practitioners Association (PHPA) which require me to have regular supervision with an accredited supervisor, therefore, in order to provide you with the best care, I may discuss your case with another practitioner. Identifying details such as name, gender and location are anonymised.

There are some important exceptions where confidentiality must be breached, and these are:

If I become aware, or have good reason to suspect, that you have knowledge of:

    • A past or future incident/situation that may be dangerous or harmful to a child, you or another adult, and that is not known to the relevant authorities.

    • Future or past criminal activity that has not been resolved in law. This means any criminal activity, of which the relevant authorities are either unaware or a case they know about which they consider not to be closed (provided you do not present information in therapy which would reasonably re-open the case). This does not include parking or traffic offences unless there is intent, by you or anyone else, to cause danger to yourself or others, or that it is deemed to be a “serious offence”. For our purposes a serious offence is something for which you could be imprisoned and for which the sentence (not necessarily imprisonment) hasn’t yet been served.

In these circumstances I will work with you to see if we can work together to make appropriate disclosures.

  • How many sessions will I need?

The amount of sessions you will need will depend on your specific needs. I believe in providing the most cost effective and efficient therapy possible. I work in a solution-focused way which means that we will look to find solutions to your issue as quickly as possible rather than spending unnecessary time focused on the problem or the past.

Some clients like to meet weekly whilst others prefer slightly longer gaps in-between sessions.

There is no pressure to attend multiple sessions and we can discuss your wishes around this at the start of your first session.

  • What if I can't be hypnotized?

Hypnosis is a natural, normal state that we go into and out of several times a day. It is this focused state of attention which, when you are engrossed in a television programme stops you from noticing a conversation that is going on next to you. You are in a trance state when you are daydreaming, or when you are completely immersed in a piece of music. You may even be in a trance as you read this.

Hypnosis in a therapy setting is about utilising this state and learning how to go in and out of it. There are different levels of hypnosis and some people will naturally go deeper than others. You might drift deeper on different days depending on what is right for you.

Hypnosis is not something you can do wrong, even the lightest trance is incredibly beneficial and most work can be done at this level. Often the more experience you have with hypnosis, the deeper you will go.

  • What issues can hypnotherapy help with?

Hypnotherapy is a technique that utilizes hypnosis to aid in the treatment of specific symptoms or health conditions.

It is sometimes used as part of a treatment plan for phobias and other anxiety disorders. It is also sometimes used for pain management, weight loss, smoking cessation, and a variety of other applications.

Research suggests that some other possible applications include:

    Chronic pain conditions

    Dementia symptoms

Nausea and vomiting related to chemotherapy

Pain during childbirth, dental procedures, or surgery

Skin conditions, such as psoriasis and warts

Symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

    Symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

Hypnotherapy may also be used by licensed physicians and psychologists in the treatment of conditions like anxiety disorders, depression, eating disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Hypnotherapy may also be helpful for changing or reducing problematic behaviors. Because of this, it is sometimes used to help people quit smoking, lose weight, and sleep better.

  • What are your fees?

Sessions last for at least 55 minutes and are £48 per session.

    Smoking cessation is a one-off £60.

There are several ways of paying for your sessions- I accept cash and bank transfer.

  • Will I lose control when hypnotized?

No. Hypnotherapy is not the same as the stage hypnosis you may have seen on television. You will not do or say anything that you do not want to.

I abide by the ethical guidelines of the PHPA which mean that I only work in a way that has your best interests at the forefront. Hypnotherapy isnot about the therapist controlling you, you have complete control at all times. You are able to move and to talk in hypnosis, and should you need to become alert at any point during the session you would do so quite naturally and easily.

  • How do I prepare for a session?

To prepare for a session, come with an open mind and a clear idea of what you want to achieve. Wear comfortable clothing and be ready to relax.
  • Do I work with under 18's?

Yes. Children have wonderfully vivid imaginations, and hypnotherapy leverages this innate creativity to make therapeutic change. Hypnotherapy for children sessions often incorporate storytelling, metaphors, and visualisation exercises, which help younger minds connect with the suggestions being offered.

  • Can hypnotherapy replace traditional therapy?

Some people find that hypnotherapy complements traditional therapy, offering an alternative perspective or method of treatment. One of the main benefits of hypnotherapy is its ability to access the subconscious mind. This can lead to breakthroughs that might take longer to achieve with traditional therapy.

  • How does hypnotherapy online work?

Conducting hypnotherapy online is no different than in person and is perfectly safe.

Zoom and Teams are available for online therapy. These are straightforward to set up and I can assist you with this process if required.

You’ll need a camera and a microphone to get started (usually, both are built in to newer laptops). It’s also worth ensuring that you have a private, quiet space in which to conduct the session uninterrupted.

There are a few other considerations that we will talk through before we start, but these are very simple and easy to follow.
